About Abalone
Abalone is the popular name in the United States for gastropod mollusk. An abalone is a univalve, meaning that it has one shell, rather than two symmetrical shells, like clams and oysters. The abalone lurks inside the shell, clinging to rocks with its foot while it searches for algae and other food sources. The shell provides a rooflike covering for the abalone and is perforated by a row of holes on one side through which the abalone respires. The inside of an abalone shell resembles iridescent mother of pearl, and is frequently used ornamentally in jewelry and inlay, while the outside of the shell is reddish brown in color.
About Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl, also called nacre, is an iridescent layer of material which forms the shell lining of many mollusks. Pearl oysters are a source of mother of pearl, which is widely used as an inlay in jewelry, furnature and musical instruments. Mother of pearl comes in several natural colors, and is often bleached and dyed for decorative use. The dye retains the shimmering layers which make mother of pearl so sought after. Like other substances found in nature, mother of pearl develops irregularities as it forms. As a result, every piece of mother of pearl jewelry or inlay is slightly different. Use mild soaps and water on mother of pearl to clean it, and avoid storing it with jewelry which may scratch it, wearing away the luminous layers of nacre.
Individuality
Slight irregularities and variations in stone color, shell color or inclusions are characteristic of their natural beauty and individuality. There may be variation from piece to piece and may differ slightly from our display photo.
